Taking a Short Break

As some of you know, in March I was formally admitted to Humboldt State University’s (HSU) Environment and Community (E&C) Program. This is an interdisciplinary Master’s program that focuses on the human dimensions of conservation. In other words, it is perfect for me.

Before the semester begins in mid-August there is an orientation class for incoming E&C students, which will consist of a 5-day field trip to the Mattole Watershed: an area of northwestern California with a strong history of community-based conservation. While there my cohorts and I will speak with local people about natural resource-related issues that are important to them, and later on we will apply what we learn by designing research projects. Essentially this orientation will serve as a brief introduction to conducting social science-oriented field work.

In order to prepare for this field trip I have been assigned several readings to complete, which I must read and take notes on. In addition, my life is becoming increasingly dominated by my upcoming move to northern California, which is approximately 2,550 miles (4,104 km) from my current location. I have much to buy and get ready for, many people to see, and I must make some progress on finding a job for the coming year. Lastly, it is important to me to keep practicing Spanish every day; as I hope to find a club or friend with whom I can frequently converse once I move.

Rather than dividing my time too thinly, I have decided to not work on any new blog posts until I have finished the assigned readings. Therefore I have nothing to release this week, accept for this brief notice. This will allow me to complete the remaining articles within a week, freeing up more time to focus on this site.

Thank you all for your understanding! I might be able to publish a more on-topic post next week, although it is too early to tell. Regardless, I will continue to visit your blogs as time allows.

  4. I hope the move turns out well for you. Good for you for following your heart and dreams. You should have no problem finding a friend who speaks Spanish in Cali. I’m originally from the Bay Area Cali (born in Santa Clara) and Spanish is almost a second (un)official language in many areas out there.

      Esa es buena noticia! Aunque te admito, no estoy completamente seguro de acerca de lo que quieres decir…porque hay algunas palabras utilizadas en maneras que no estoy familiar con. Tú vas a terminar tu licenciatura en al fin del año, cierto? Y asi qué estás buscando por un maestría en respecto a las dimensiones humanas de la conservación. Es verdad?

        Si si, es eso :) estoy terminando mi licenciatura en biología y el año que viene quiero estudiar más de conservación! Y toda información que tengas de eso me va a ayudar mucho :)

        1. Sí! Parece que me he convertido en mejor en leer y escribir español desde empecé chateando con personas como tu en esta lengua. El próximo paso es encontrar gente con quien yo puedo conversar frecuentamente sin tener que conducir demasiado lejos.

          ¡Buenisímo! ¡Estoy muy entusiasmado de que tú vayas a aprender más sobre la conservación! ¡Y estoy aún más feliz de que la información en mi blog te haya ayudado! Si alguna vez quieres más información, tengo muchos estudios que podría ser utíl para ti. Casi todos de ellos están acerca de felinos silvestres o la psicología, ¡así espero que te gustan esos temas! :D

          También, si tú estuvieres infructuoso de encontrar una programa de maestría que te gusta cerca de dónde vives, hay algunas en los Estados Unidos ;) Sólo tenemos que esperar que Donald Trump no comienza guerra mundial 3 antes de entonces :P

          1. Me alegra de que te haya servido! 😄 y seguro encuentras por allá a alguien que hable español, y sino, hace algún curso de conversación! Esos sirven un montón :)
            En la licenciatura vemos algunos temas de conservación pero quiero saber más, asi que estoy buscando alternativas :) Voy a fijarme en EEUU a ver que encuentro! En España vi unos muy buenos :) Yo también espero que no suceda eso con Trump jajajaja.
            Y acepto los estudios para leerlos y ver de que tratan :)

          2. Sí, hay muchas personas que hablan español en California. Uno de mis compañeros de casa está aprendiendolo también, así podemos practicar junto a veces. Pero mi opción favorito sería encontrar un club idioma español. No sería como efectivo como un curso, pero no creo que yo tendré tiempo por un curso.

            Hay tanto aprender acerca de la conservación! Implica biología, las ciencias sociales, economía, políticas y mucho más. España sería un país excelente para estudiar tambien! Hay linces ibéricos allí 😉

            Pero tú estás en Argentina, cierto? América del Sur es una de las regiones más importantes para la conservación.

            Sii, a mi me encanta porque no solo es biología, como decís vos hay muchas otras cosas en juego y lo mejor es interconectarlas todas para lograr una solución :)

    1. Thank you for your encouragement, Les! I probably will be writing more about that community, because it will become difficult for me to keep doing so many research a oriented posts. Also, I haven’t forgotten about your email! It’s on my to-do list for tomorrow.
