To all those celebrating Christmas today, merry Christmas!
I have procured a simple gift for you: a series of photos of big cats in the snow. Scroll down to view the pictures and their credits. I hope you like them!
The first photo is of a jaguar (Panthera onca) having a yawn. I love how the jaguar’s yellow-orange coat and black rosettes are contrasted by the faded, snowy background. This picture was taken by Eric Kilby at the Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts.
The second picture is of an Amur tigress (Panthera tigris altaica) and her cub at the Buffalo Zoo in Buffalo, New York. Dave Pape shot this photo and uploaded it to Wikipedia.
For the third photograph, I found a picture of a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). Mark Dumont is the photographer, and he took this picture at the Cincinnati Zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Finally, the featured image is of a cat that one would expect to find in the snow: a snow leopard (Panthera uncia). It consists of a mother snow leopard and her cub, and it was taken by Tambako the Jaguar (Emmanuel Keller) at Zoo Zürich in Switzerland.

It wasn’t until I kept seeing the word “zoo” pop up that I finally realized those cats aren’t usually seen in the snow! Very pretty pictures!

Thank you, my bushy-tailed friend! Jaguars and cheetahs are rarely seen in the snow…and I mean very rarely (I have seen one photo of a wild jaguar in light snow in Arizona). Amur (AKA Siberian) tigers and snow leopards do live in snowy climates, but good luck getting such perfect shots of them in the wild!
