Well friends, today is October 23. That makes it International Snow Leopard Day: a day set aside to celebrate and generate support for snow leopards (Panthera uncia).
Snow leopards are extraordinary creatures that are somehow able to survive in the harsh mountains of Central Asia, and yet do so with unparalleled grace and beauty. Here is a ‘quick facts’ guide I wrote about snow leopards last year, which should serve as a good introduction to this remarkable species.
An excellent side-effect of International #SnowLeopardDay is that the Twitterverse is alive with pictures and videos of snow leopards. Since what people say on Twitter apparently counts as real news now (God, help us), here are a few of my favorite tweets thus far:
The sentiment expressed in the last tweet rings especially true. While not everyone lives in Central Asia, we can all do our part to help protect snow leopards.
There are a host of great organizations working to conserve ‘the mountain ghost,’ such as Panthera, the Snow Leopard Conservancy, and the Snow Leopard Trust. A donation to any of these groups would be the perfect way to honor the spirit of International Snow Leopard Day.
Also, climate change is one of the major threats to snow leopards. Since it is currently election season in the United States, one of the most important things Americans can do is to vote for candidates who are serious about tackling climate change.
Happy International Snow Leopard Day! Please set aside some time today to learn about snow leopards and to contribute to their conservation.

Went back and read your fact sheet on these guys! Growing up my sister had a stuffed animal snow leopard. (And I don’t mean taxidermy) They are majestic creatures and we’re lucky to have a species like this still on the planet. I vote for snow leopard as president!
