New Essay Published in The Revelator

Hey everyone, I have very exciting news to share! I’ve just had a major essay published in The Revelator: an amazing and quickly-growing magazine!

This was an intense essay, involving many hours of research, interviews, transcriptions, and writing. It’s about how we can do science communication more effectively by showing our true selves and allowing audiences to connect with us as human beings, and not just experts.

The major source of inspiration for this essay was the late Anthony Bourdain. He was able to make engaging, informative television shows without a bunch of fluff, and he did so be relying on authenticity and human connection; Bourdain showed his guests being themselves, and that made them seem relatable and trustworthy.

Similarly, by encouraging scientists to let down their guards and be themselves during SciComm projects, we can make it easier for the public to connect with them on a level that transcends academic authority.

  6. Josh, I wanted to take the time to read your article (all of it) before commenting. It is very good – I can see why it was published and it’s obvious that you worked very hard to prepare it through your research and writing. The human factor is so important and you have brought that through very clearly by presenting the humanity of the featured scientists. I really enjoyed the interview style – very professionally done. I would encourage everyone to take the time to read your essay and I look forward to reading more of your work. Congratulations, Josh! Keep up the good work!

    1. Wow, thanks so much, Jacques! This article certainly involved a lot of work, not only the “homework” specifically for the essay, but also all of the work that went into my thesis…which is really when I developed the thoughts that turned into this essay. The human factor is indeed important, and that’s something that Bourdain seems to have understood on an intuitive level.

      I’ll certainly try to keep up the good work! Hopefully this article is the first of many.
