This is another guest post from Dan Coconate about conservation in a specific region: the Florida Everglades. In it, Dan talks about the things that ordinary citizens can do to help restore that incredible ecoregion.

Intro
Anyone who lives in or has visited Florida can tell you how much has changed within the last 10 to 15 years. As the population continues to boom, Florida’s natural habitats take a hit – especially the Florida Everglades.
Due to human activity, the natural flow of water in the Everglades has changed, which can result in an ecosystem’s collapse. In addition to pollution, littering, and carbon emissions, there are various invasive species lurking beyond the water and in Florida’s communities and common spaces.
However, there are many ways we can solve these problems. Discover a few simple ways you can help restore the Florida Everglades.
Hunt Harmful and Invasive Species
Florida boasts a beautiful environment and many unique species that thrive in the tropical climate. From beautiful palm trees to various species of birds, you can see why many tourists love to vacation by Florida’s beaches.
However, invasive species are damaging the ecosystems that people love to visit. Iguanas, Burmese pythons, and wild hogs now call the Everglades home. You can hunt them in some areas of the Everglades to help restore the natural food webs. Many outfitters work with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to help protect the environment.
Properly Maintain Your Vehicle
Did you know that not maintaining your vehicle can contribute to environmental issues?
Another great way you can help restore the Florida Everglades is by properly taking care of your vehicle. Doing routine fluid changes, performing regular maintenance, and properly inflating your tires are ways to conserve energy and use less gas mileage. In turn, your eco-conscious driving will do less harm to the environment.
Back off on the Pesticides
In Florida, many people love to have a beautiful lawn. However, when you’re maintaining your yard, you can help preserve the environment and restore the Everglades by going easy on the use of pesticides and chemicals.
The ground absorbs pesticides and chemicals, allowing them to enter the groundwater. These substances can then harm the water and animals in the Everglades. Instead of using manufactured pesticides, you can use alternatives such as peppermint or rosemary essential oils to keep the pests away. This way, your yard is green, pest-free, and environmentally friendly.
Closing Thoughts
Keep the Everglades beautiful by doing your part. With these simple activities, you can help improve native, Florida ecosystems and restore natural cycles. You can also work with the FWC for more hands-on ways to improve the Everglade’s conditions.
